The origin of the fig tree

Figs are native to Western Asia (the Mediterranean area), where the climate is ideal for their production. Fig fruits are consumed both fresh and in a store form such as dried.

The ancient history of fig fruits

The fig (anjeer) tree was a sacred, mystic tree in ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, as well as a symbol of fertility. Figs were a staple food of the Greeks and the Spartans. It is mentioned in holy books and served at religious festivities.

Fresh Vs dried figs

As the comparison between fresh Vs dried figs, these advantages are considerable:
  1. Although the drying process causes figs (anjir) to lose water-soluble vitamins, the fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and other helpful compounds increase.
  2. Dried figs have higher amounts of phenolic compounds and antioxidants than fresh ones.
  3. Dried figs are rich in fiber, and high amounts of fiber in the diet can benefit overall health by preventing certain types of cancers.
  4. Dried figs have potassium, which helps to regulate the amount of sugar absorbed into the body.
  5. Dried figs contain pectin, which is useful for low blood cholesterol.
