Recently, natural kernel shipments show a fast-growing trend in global markets. In this regard, China with 329 tons was the first largest importer of pistachio without shell in 2018. Furthermore, China exported 994 tons of the kernel of the pistachio nuts in the same year (3).
The total European consumption of pistachio kernels was estimated at around 88,000 tonnes in 2018. Of this quantity, around 11,000 tonnes were consumed as kernels (13%). Germany is Europe’s largest and the world’s second-largest importer of pistachios. It is also a re-exporter of imported pistachios. More than one-third of all imported pistachios are re‑exported from Germany to other European markets (4).
IPA data show that 14% (1,355 tons) of Iran’s international shipment in 2019/2020 was shelled pistachio. In the 2020 trade year, most destinations for Iran pistachio kernels were Iraq 213, Germany 170, India 162, Syria 50, Lebanon 46, Jordan 39, Russia 31, and China 22 tons. However, Re-export markets of Persian pistachio kernels were U.A.E and Turkey with 257 and 164 tons respectively (2).
Pistachio kernels and ingredient can be store for up to one year, but as whit all nuts, we recommend you use from season to season and store carefully. Keep cases in cold storage for long periods of storage. Best stored at 0-3ᵒC and 55-70% relative humidity. Keep kernels away from warm areas. Store pistachio kernel away from foods with strong odors (citrus, fish, etc.) as they could absorb odors.
